European Driving Schools Association: New ACEM project in partnership with the German Road Safety Council (DVR) 600 400 European Motorcycle Training Quality Label

We meet Dr. Veneta Vassileva, Safety coordinator of ACEM, the Association of European Motorcycle Industry.

Veneta explain us the new ACEM project in partnership with the German Road Safety Council (DVR).

If you permit me, I would like first to explain what is the background of this new initiative. In recent years a substantial improvement in motorcycle safety has been achieved in Europe, but the motorcycle industry believes that further efforts are needed to decrease road fatalities, reduce rider’s vulnerability and reap the benefits  that PTWs bring to society in terms of mobility, leisure, sport or tourism. FIM Europe magazine: A new European Training Quality Label for motorcyclists 1198 748 European Motorcycle Training Quality Label

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM)1 has set up a partnership with the German Road Safety Council (DVR)2 to create the first European Training Quality Label for post-license motorcycling training programmes. The key objective of this initiative is to help European riders to easily identify the best post-license training options available in their countries. We consider this to be of paramount importance because all motorcycle safety studies consistently identify human behaviour as the most important cause of motorcycle accidents and most European countries have policies in the area licensing and training but not on post-license training.

How does the Training Quality Label work in practice?

By focusing on aspects such as road safety, hazard perception and risk awareness, the programmes awarded with the European Training Quality Label will promote defensive riding in real road traffic conditions and allow motorcyclists to share the road in a responsible and safer manner. In recent years a substantial improvement in motorcycle safety has been achieved. The latest data available from the OECD International Road Traffic Accident Database shows that the number of fatal accidents involving powered two-wheeler users decreased from 7,612 to 4,262 between 2000 and 2014, a reduction of 44%. All this took place parallel to the substantial growth of powered two-wheelers across Europe, which grew from around 28.3 million vehicles in 2000 to 36.1 million in 2014, an increase of 27.6%.

An analysis by segments shows that the deaths of motorcyclists decreased from 4,304 in 2010 to 3,561 in 2014, a reduction of 17.3%. In the same period, the number of moped riders that suffered fatal accidents in Europe also decreased from 975 to 622, a reduction of 36.2%. Continue reading in PanEuropean networks

Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Association: The Motorcycle Industry Introduces A Quality Label For Rider Training 907 623 European Motorcycle Training Quality Label

Most motorcyclists take some form of initial training to get their A licence, but for a lot of riders this is not enough. They want to keep learning and follow advanced rider training courses. But how do you know which training provider to pick?

ACEM, the European association of motorcycle manufacturers, together with the German Road Safety Council DVR, launched a new European Training Quality Label that could help motorcyclists chose the right advanced training. Continue reading in fema-online.eu

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, ACEM, hosted today its 12th annual conference, ‘The Safe Ride to the Future’, around the issue of motorcycling safety in the European Union. This edition of the Brussels annual conference attracted more than 150 attendees from the motorcycle industry, European and national administrations and users’ organisations, as well as a wide range of stakeholders.

The event explored key issues around motorcycle safety such as the benefits of advanced vehicle technology for powered-two wheelers, the need to ensure that all road users have adequate behaviours on the road, or the importance of inclusive motorcycle safety plans, particularly at national level.

As part of the conference, ACEM and the German Road Safety Council (Deutscher Verkehrssicherheitsrat) presented a new European Training Quality Label for high-quality post-license training programmes. A motorcycle training scheme run by the Royal Dutch Motorcycle Federation (KNMV) was the first one to receive the certification.

ACEM also organised an exhibition on motorcycle safety technology that featured some of the latest vehicle models launched by the industry as well as innovative safety devices such as a side view assyst system, a wireless airbag jacket and an electronic windscreen.

ACEM and BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller said:

– “ACEM members manufacture some of the most advanced motorcycles and mopeds in the world. But it is also important that motorcyclists have good riding skills and a responsible attitude on the road. This is precisely why we are partnering with the German Road Safety Council to promote the best post-license training programmes across Europe”.

– “Intelligent transport systems (ITS) solutions have also started to make their way into our industry. We expect that in the future vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technologies will help to reduce the risk of accidents by allowing powered two-wheelers to effectively communicate with other vehicles”.

ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot said:

– “There are more than 36 million motorcycles and mopeds on Europe’s roads, which help to save time and money for commuters, increase urban traffic fluidity and reduce congestion”.

– “Today’s discussions clearly showed that motorcycling safety is a shared responsibility, and that it is essential that vehicle manufacturers, European and national administrations and users’ organisations work together to achieve lasting safety improvements”.
